Benfica were close to signing Santos centre-back João Ananias, but the move collapsed amid a dispute over money owed from Benjamín Rollheiser’s transfer, UOL Esporte reports.

Agent Marcelo Pettinatti mediated talks, and Santos were willing to sell for seven million euros, a price Benfica accepted.

Rui Costa’s hierarchy then sought to reduce the fee because Santos have yet to settle what is owed from Rollheiser’s 11 million euros transfer in February 2025. Benfica kept 15 per cent of the 26-year-old’s rights, and the impasse ended talks.

Meanwhile, Benfica have agreed a deal with Athletic MG for Gabriel Índio. The 19-year-old left-footed defender will join the first-team squad as the fourth option.

Marco Silva’s side will also sign another centre-back to compete with Tomás Araújo and António Silva. Botafogo also owe Benfica millions.
