Birmingham City confirm player departure to League One club | OneFootball

Milton Keynes Dons have signed Jonathan Leko from Birmingham City for an undisclosed fee, as was confirmed on Friday evening.

The versatile forward has struggled to showcase his ability in a positive light since moving to St Andrew’s from West Bromwich Albion in the summer of 2020, and Leko will join up with the Dons in the midst of a League One relegation battle.

The 23-year-old scored just once in 50 appearances for the Blues and will be keen to move on in his career by starting quickly at his new club.

Leko revealed his emotions about completing the move when he spoke to the Dons’ iFollow service, quotes are provided by the club’s website.

He said: “I’m really pleased to be here.

“I’ve been aware of the interest for a while so I’m glad it’s done and I’m excited to get started.

“This is a good club and I know we like to play a good style of football so I think this is a great fit for me.

“I’m willing to get on the ball and beat players, and hopefully I can score some goals too!

“I know the position we find ourselves in but I know a couple of wins can change everything.

“Hopefully I can come in and help us towards that.”

Leko chipped in with two goals and three assists in 25 third tier appearances on loan at Charlton Athletic last season, showing in flashes his class above the level, Mark Jackson will be hoping that the former England U20 international can transition into the side quickly.

Leko’s commitment and work ethic came into question at times during his loan spell in South London last season, because it is apparent very quickly in observing his dribbling ability, that the 23-year-old should be playing in the Championship.

It could be a smart addition for the Dons if they can motivate him to a high level, no third tier full back will look forward to the task of taming him, but the Dons cannot afford for Leko to take time to get up to speed.

On paper this still looks like a squad that is too good to go down, but with Morecambe and Burton Albion showing some fight in the last month or so they have slipped to second bottom, and Leko probably is not a player naturally suited to a relegation battle.
