Blues' club-record signing has been the subject of exit talk at various points of the summer

Coventry City have become the latest Premier League side to be credited with interest in Birmingham City's club-record signing, Jay Stansfield, with under three weeks of the summer transfer window remaining.

That is according to Football Insider, with Frank Lampard looking to strengthen his squad at the Coventry Building Society Arena ahead of the Sky Blues' first top-flight season for 25 years after winning the Championship title in 2025/26.

Birmingham harbour ambitions of joining their West Midlands rivals back in the Premier League sooner rather than later, having been exiled from the division themselves since the 2010/11 season, whilst only going close to returning on one occasion since then.

The summer window at St. Andrew's @ Knighthead Park has certainly been an intriguing one thus far for Chris Davies, with five signings officially announced in the days leading up to the first game of the second tier season against Sheffield United at Bramall Lane, whilst three have also departed, with Kyogo Furuhashi, being the most high-profile of those.

However, whilst he has become the 'poster boy' for Knighthead's major rebuild in B9 since returning from Fulham two summers ago, Stansfield's own future has certainly been up for debate.

The England youth international, naturally, was under the spotlight plenty of times last season due to the aforementioned club-record fee parted with during Birmingham's remarkable season in League One.

After scoring 12 goals during his loan spell from Craven Cottage during Blues' relegation season of 2023/24, the 23-year-old, once again, hit double figures in last season's Championship, as well as netting once in the EFL Cup, but only two of those strikes would come after the turn of 2026.

Since the beginning of the off-season, Blues' striking department has been reshuffled, with Kyogo exiting and Marvin Ducksch also attracting transfer interest, whilst Luis Vazquez arrived from Anderlecht in late July.

Clubs such as Everton, Hull City, Ipswich Town and Sunderland were linked with a move for the Tiverton-born man earlier this summer, whilst it was also reported at the time that the Second City side were 'relaxed' regarding the retention of his services.

However, Football Insider's latest report states Blues are 'willing' to entertain offers for Stansfield between now and Deadline Day, which comes as a major surprise in this particular saga.

At 23, Stansfield is still yet to enter the 'prime' of his career, and has already put up some rather eye-catching numbers in previous seasons relative to his age and experience at the time, even if last season was one of mixed fortunes from his perspective.

However, Birmingham still have the ball firmly in their court when it comes to commanding a sizeable fee for his signature, and a figure which could already be in mind may only increase if a bidding war ensues in the weeks before the September 1st deadline.

At the time of his record switch from West London, the forward agreed a seven-year contract, with five of those years still yet to be fulfilled, which further showcased the potential which Davies and those higher up at St. Andrew's saw in Stansfield to spearhead a charge back to the Premier League.

Departure rumours involving Stansfield this summer have certainly split opinions, but in truth, some Blues fans may feel that if he was to make a shock exit, the pre-season form shown by January buy, August Priske, could soften the blow.

The Danish youth international opened his competitive account for the club against Portsmouth on the final day of last season, and has continued his strong form throughout pre-season, which included a strike against Barcelona, before netting the winner against Swansea City in the EFL Cup first round on Saturday.

That said, it would also be intriguing to see how Stansfield would fare in the Premier League at present, given his goalscoring struggles in recent months, added to the fact he has only played four top-flight games beforehand.
