Flamengo lost the race for Thiago Almada to River Plate, with football director Boto pointing to the club’s financial discipline. According to Coluna Do Fla, he said their stance meant the deal was not pursued at any cost.

He acknowledged Almada had been a target but said the move collapsed because the president insists on responsibility in spending. Echoing a former official, Boto said that with 50% of the irresponsibility he sees at other Brazilian clubs, Flamengo would win for the next 20 years. He added that they want to pay everyone, so the third target fell through, speaking at the presentation of Anthony and Joaquín.

Flamengo’s final proposal was around 30 million euros, equivalent to 50% of Almada’s economic rights with Atlético de Madrid. Despite a verbal understanding, the midfielder’s wage demands were high, which pushed Flamengo away. At his River unveiling, Almada said family considerations influenced his choice.

River Plate agreed a deal with Atlético de Madrid worth about 20 million euros, around R$ 127 to 128 million. That is roughly 10 million euros less than Flamengo had put on the table.

Boto’s remarks alluded to clubs such as Corinthians and Botafogo, which have faced restrictions on registering new contracts because of financial issues. Flamengo want to avoid any transfer ban.

Flamengo’s next match is against Remo on Sunday at 16:00 Brasília time at Estádio Mangueirão in Belém, in the Brasileirão. Possible debuts are on the cards.
