Ernesto Valverde was discussed for the Valencia job after Carlos Corberán’s dismissal two weeks ago, but Javier Aguirre has been appointed by new sporting director Braulio Vázquez. Vázquez has clarified why Valverde was never a realistic candidate.

"I speak to him every week or two, even when he was at Athletic we would talk about Athletic or Osasuna matches. He is my friend. Of course I speak to him," he said on Radioestadio on Onda Cero.

Rumours had suggested his arrival might hinge on LaLiga’s green light over the club’s finances. Vázquez rejected that, saying, "They said I needed to know the 'Fair Play' to speak with Ernesto and it is not so. I do not need to know anything to speak with Ernesto."

"Are you going to keep coaching?" he asked. Valverde replied, joking, "Are you mad? I need to rest."

"I knew he was not going to coach for now. He could never be a real option. Now he will be out taking photos somewhere," Vázquez added.
