Chelsea’s poor run of form worsened at the Amex Stadium as Brighton & Hove Albion ran out comfortable 3-0 winners, inflicting another damaging defeat on Liam Rosenior’s side and further denting their hopes of European qualification.
The Blues arrived on the south coast already struggling, having gone four Premier League games without a win and failing to score in each of those matches. That sequence was extended to five as Brighton delivered a dominant display to move above Chelsea into sixth place.
Brighton wasted no time asserting themselves, taking the lead after just three minutes. Ferdi Kadioglu reacted quickest inside the box to fire home following a loose clearance, giving the hosts an early advantage they never relinquished.
Chelsea were second best for long periods of the first half, with Brighton creating a string of chances and controlling possession with ease. Despite that pressure, the Seagulls went into the break with only a one-goal cushion, leaving Chelsea still in the contest.
Any hopes of a response were quickly extinguished after the restart. Jack Hinshelwood made up for earlier missed chances by finishing off a flowing move in the 56th minute to double the lead and put Brighton firmly in command.
From there, Chelsea offered little in attack, struggling to create any sustained pressure or meaningful chances. Brighton, by contrast, looked the more likely side to add to the scoreline.
They eventually did so late on when Danny Welbeck finished smartly from close range after a well-worked move down the left, rounding off a dominant evening for the home side.
The result leaves the Blues seven points off the top five and facing an increasingly uphill battle to secure Champions League football next season.
