Brighton & Hove Albion have completed the signing of Spanish midfielder Chema Andrés from VfB Stuttgart on a five-year contract.

The 21-year-old defensive midfielder joined Stuttgart from Real Madrid last summer for €5 million and went on to make 26 Bundesliga appearances, scoring three goals and providing one assist.

Chema also featured nine times in Stuttgart’s Europa League campaign as the German side reached the last 16.

His move to Brighton comes after Mats Wieffer suffered an injury in Sunday’s 4-3 defeat by Chelsea. With Carlos Baleba having joined Manchester United, the Seagulls needed further options in defensive midfield.

Chema came through Real Madrid’s academy before making the move to Germany and establishing himself as a regular at Stuttgart.

The Spain Under-21 international now heads to the Premier League as Brighton continue their busy summer recruitment.
