Bruno Coelho has returned to Portugal to join Sporting Lourel’s football side for the 2026/27 season. The former Benfica futsal player and ex-Portugal captain was unveiled on Wednesday in a surprise switch of codes.
The club said in a statement that the 39-year-old midfielder will strengthen the squad next term, adding that his record speaks for itself and that his talent, ambition and commitment will be vital as they continue to write their story.
Coelho spent 11 seasons with Benfica, punctuated by stints at ACCS in France in 2020/2021 and Napoli in Italy in 2021/2022. He then played the last two campaigns in Latvia with RFS Futsal and Riga FC.
His honours include a Futsal World Cup, two European titles and the Intercontinental Finalissima with Portugal. With Benfica he won three league championships, four Portuguese Cups, four League Cups and five Super Cups, and he also collected titles in France and Latvia.
Officially, Coelho, capped 193 times, has not ended his futsal career, although combining the court and the pitch does not appear viable. Sporting Lourel finished last season third in the Lisbon Football Association, narrowly missing promotion to the Campeonato de Portugal.
