CAN 2025 / Algeria: Petkovic acknowledges DR Congo's form

CAN 2025 / Algeria: Vladimir Petkovic wary of DR Congo!
Moments after Algeria’s victory over Equatorial Guinea (3-1), Vladimir Petkovic expressed satisfaction—without a hint of triumphalism. The head coach highlighted his squad’s solidity, especially in the first half, and put the spotlight on the vital role played by the young talents who started from the opening whistle.
“We created several chances; it’s a shame we couldn’t convert more of them,” he lamented,
while also praising “the players’ response throughout the full 90 minutes.” Seven players born after 2000 made the starting lineup, a clear sign of a deliberate renewal.
Looking ahead, Petkovic set the tone for the round of 16:
“We’ll have enough time to prepare well for this match and I believe my team will be ready.”
He urged his players to come back “with more freshness and enthusiasm” to face an opponent he describes as “balanced and dangerous.” The coach also reassured fans about Mohamed Tougaï’s condition after he was forced off with an injury: “It’s nothing serious. He’ll take a few days to rest.” In contrast, he admitted that “the injuries to Chergui and Hadjam don’t offer much hope.”
Beyond the result, Petkovic reiterated his philosophy: protect the experienced core, highlight seasoned players, and nurture the next generation.
“Some players bring their experience. Others want to win out on the pitch, and that’s a very good thing.”
Fully aware that the Africa Cup of Nations is fought in both body and mind, he also wants to support his squad on a human level:
“I make sure to give as many players as possible this chance, as they need confidence.”
Ambition, patience, and transmission—three words that will now guide Algeria as they approach a high-stakes round of 16 clash.
