Andrés Castrín is set for a meaningful return to San Mamés, the stadium where he made his LaLiga debut, as Sevilla visit Athletic on Saturday.

He had made his first-team bow a year earlier in the Copa del Rey against Olot. As reported by as.com, the Galician defender earned a surprise start on the 2025-26 opening day amid registration issues, partnering Kike Salas. Athletic won 3-2 after Sevilla had levelled from 2-0.

Kike, now an almost undisputed starter and captain at centre-back, is suspended after his red card against Rayo Vallecano. Castrín therefore could return to the XI unless Luis García Plaza opts for Juan Iglesias, used as a centre-back in pre-season.

Fitness problems limited Castrín’s summer minutes, though he is now available. He stayed on the bench against Rayo. Sevilla have handed him the number 5 shirt after his 23rd birthday.

Club and player remain in talks over a deal that officially runs to June 2027. It is expected that, once the summer window closes, an extension will be possible, following a notable first season of 19 LaLiga matches and 2 Copa ties, including a crucial goal against Espanyol for survival.

That strike earned him the nickname ‘Castrínbauer’ and the affection of Sevilla fans, who will travel in numbers to Bilbao. For the centre-back, it is a chance to improve on his top-flight bow and bring something positive back to the Sánchez-Pizjuán.
