CBF to discuss cutting Brasileirão relegations to three at next meeting | OneFootball

The CBF will take to its next club meeting a proposal to reduce Série A relegations from four to three.

According to Coluna Do Fla, the issue returns days after Monday’s 21 September meeting, where Série A and B sides approved a gradual cut to the foreign player limit. Another meeting is scheduled for October.

For now it remains at discussion stage, no regulation change has been approved and no start date is defined.

Cutting one relegation would affect both tiers. If only three fall, only three would be promoted, keeping Série A at 20 clubs.

A phased shift has been floated, including a play-off between the third-bottom in Série A and the third in Série B, though nothing has been voted on.

Série B has already changed for 2026, with the top two going up and teams from third to sixth playing two-legged ties for the other two places.

Backers cite the 20 percent relegation rate, noting the Premier League and LaLiga drop only three, and the financial hit to larger clubs. Vasco, Santos, Internacional, Grêmio, Bahia and Vitória support the move, while resistance comes from Série B over the loss of a promotion spot.

Monday’s vote left Flamengo in a minority as clubs cut the foreign quota from nine to eight in 2027 and to five in 2030. Flamengo, Bahia and Londrina opposed it. With 10 foreigners, Flamengo will be affected, and October is set to revisit relegation and a 12-game cap and B teams.
