Manchester City begin their pre-season preparations with a battle of British champions as they face Celtic in North Carolina on Wednesday, 24th July, at 12:30am (UK time).

For the fourth season running, Pep Guardiola’s men enter the new season as defending champions after pipping Arsenal to another Premier League title on the final day of 2023/24. It’s the first time any English team has ever won four straight league titles and now, of course, they’ll look to make more history with five-in-a-row.

Celtic have a title of their own to defend after beating arch-rivals Rangers to the Scottish Premiership — also beating their Glasgow adversaries in the Scottish Cup final — meaning they’ve taken 12 of the last 13 league titles. That has seen Celtic come to within just one of drawing level with Rangers’ world record 55 league titles. The Hoops have a friendly against MLS side DC United to contest before this match.

Who will miss Man City’s pre-season tour of United States?

Manchester City had more players involved at Euro 2024 than any other team, with 14 of their stars heading to Germany over the summer. Among those, only Mateo Kovacic and Josko Gvardiol are expected to make the trip to the United States after Croatia went out in the group stages.

That means Guardiola will be unable to call upon Kevin De Bruyne, Jeremy Doku, Manuel Akanji, Ruben Dias and Bernardo Silva, who all went to the quarter-finals, while Dutch defender Nathan Ake is also having an extended break after reaching the semi-finals. This group are expected to return only on August 5 to prepare for the Community Shield clash with Manchester United.

Then, of course, there’s the English contingent of Phil Foden, Kyle Walker and John Stones, who featured heavily in the Three Lions’ run to the final, where they were beaten by Spanish teammate Rodri. This quartet may even sit out the Community Shield.

Julian Alvarez has already spent the summer in the United States, but also won’t take part in the tour following his role in helping Argentina win Copa America.

Based on who has reported for training so far, Kovacic, Gvardiol, Erling Haaland, Jack Grealish and Kalvin Phillips may be the only senior outfield players on show for City in the United States, joined by experienced youngsters Oscar Bobb, James McAtee and Rico Lewis. Ederson’s status remains up in the air as he continues to be linked with a move to Saudi Arabia, but Stefan Ortega should be available to make the trip.

Celtic are still busy finalising some summer recruits, who may not be available in time to make this trip. However, a strong core that includes the likes of Cameron Carter-Vickers and Callum McGregor should feature.
