The Champions League returned with a bang this week as Europe's elite began their campaigns in entertaining fashion.

There were hat-tricks, record-breaking performances and spectacular goals across matchday one, while several players made immediate impacts for their new clubs.

Goalkeeper: Diogo Costa - FC Porto

A busy night for Portugal's number one who kept the score respectable in defeat to Manchester City. He made eight saves, including five in the first half alone as Porto came under siege, in an impressive individual outing.

Centre-back: Ronald Araujo - Liverpool

Is this really the same footballer that someBarcelona fans were celebrating leaving on loan? Araujo has fixed a problem position for Liverpool at right-back, with dominant duel-winning. He added an assist against Atletico Madrid and Andoni Iraola is already calling for a permanent deal.

Centre-back: Marc Bartra - Real Betis

Real Betis marked their return to the Champions League for the first time since 2005/06 with a 3-2 win at Lille on matchday one. Marc Bartra was the unlikely hero for the Spanish side, with the veteran heading home either side of half-time. Bartra had scored just one previous goal in 67 European appearances.

Centre-back: Dean Huijsen - Real Madrid

A mature performance from theReal Madrid man, who dealt with everything Inter threw at him. Huijsen made more clearances (12) than any other player on matchday one and timed several interventions perfectly.

Central midfield: Martin Baturina - Como

Croatia's Golden Generation of midfielders is coming to an end, but Martin Baturina looks ready to take the reins from Luka Modric.

The 23-year-old has started the season superbly at Como, and now has five goals and assists in his last three games. Baturina wrote himself into the history books with Como's first-ever Champions League goal in the win over Leipzig.

Central midfield: Martin Odegaard - Arsenal

Martin Odegaard is purring right now. The Arsenal captain was the catalyst for a dominant display in Napoli, scoring the decisive goal and running the show in midfield.

His goal was a beauty, blasted in off the woodwork, while no player in the Champions League created more chances on matchday one.

Central midfield: Michael Olise - Bayern Munich

Mr nonchalant was at it again asBayern Munich ran riot in the second half to thrash Bodo/Glimt.

After a goalless first half, the German giants scored five after the break, with Olise crossing for Harry Kane to net, and scoring a late brace himself. One of which was an early contender for Champions League Goal of the Season.

Right-wing: Lamine Yamal - Barcelona

A record-breaking night for Lamine Yamal, who now has 21 goal involvements in the Champions League (11 goals, 10 assists). The Spaniard surpassed Kylian Mbappe's record for the most by a teenager in the competition's history.

It was a milestone moment on another electric night from Yamal, who led the contest for duels won (12), successful take-ons (7), chances created (4), assists (2), and scored a free-kick against Feyenoord.

Left-wing: Ferran Torres - Paris Saint-Germain

Ferran Torres has hit the ground running at PSG, scoring five times in four appearances. Torres marked his first Champions League game for his new side with a hat-trick, as the holders made light work of Slovan Bratislava. He looks a smart addition to Luis Enrique's all-conquering side.

Centre-forward: Raphinha - Barcelona

Looks like he's been playing number nine his whole career and has the numbers to back it up. Raphinha scored twice as Barcelona beat Feyenoord 5-1 at Camp Nou, including an outrageous move that saw him sit two defenders down before scoring.

Raphinha now has 36 goals and assists in 34 Champions League games, and is one of only two players to record 20+ goals and 15+ assists across the last two seasons, alongside Vinicius Junior.

Centre-forward: Ermedin Demirovic - Stuttgart

Ermedin Demirovic hit a hat-trick inside the opening 32 minutes as Stuttgart strolled past Viking. The Bosnian's treble was thefifth-earliest hat-trick in Champions League history, and saw him eclipse Kevin Kuranyi and Mario Gomez for the most UCL goals scored for the German side.
