Tyler Bindon is set to undergo a medical to finalise a loan move to Charlton Athletic

Charlton Athletic are set to sign Nottingham Forest defender Tyler Bindon on loan for the season, as the Addicks look to fix their current defensive injury crisis.

Nathan Jones' side have begun the Championship campaign brilliantly, being one of three sides to have won both their league outings thus far.

However, the Addicks are already at the bare bones across their backline after three major centre-back injuries to begin the campaign, two occurring 15 minutes into their 5-1 defeat in the EFL Cup at Tottenham Hotspur on Wednesday night.

Indeed, both Collins Sichenje and Billy Koumetio, Charlton's centre-back pairing on Wednesday night, were forced off through injury. With them both joining Reece Burke on the sidelines, Charlton have needed to act fast to bring in reinforcements.

According to Pete O'Rourke, Nottingham Forest defender Tyler Bindon is set to join Charlton on loan for the season, with the New Zealand international due at the Valley for a medical shortly.

Bindon broke through at Reading in League One and was one of the stars of what was otherwise a difficult time for the Royals under former owner Dai Yongge.

Forest realised his potential in February 2025, signing the centre-back before allowing him to finish the rest of the campaign with the Royals — a campaign where they finished just outside the third-tier play-offs.

The 21-year-old is yet to play for Oliver Glasner's side, being sent out on loan once more, this time last summer to Sheffield United, who were managed by former Royals boss Ruben Selles at the time. He started the first four games of the Spaniard's disastrous reign at Bramall Lane, but was an afterthought in the early stages of Chris Wilder's return to the club.

It was an injury crisis at the back for the South Yorkshire side in December which gave Bindon an opportunity under Wilder, who was initially set to terminate his loan the next month. The 21-year-old started all but eight league games in 2026, after impressing when given the chance.

Now, Bindon looks set for a second Championship loan, where Forest will be hoping he can be given a more prominent role across a full campaign.

There's a lot of excitement amongst Charlton fans at the prospect of signing Bindon on loan. After losing a couple of centre-backs on Wednesday night, they'd have settled for any arrival, but in the New Zealand international, they feel they've got an upgrade.

"That’ll do nicely," one fan said on X in response to Pete O'Rourke. "Take that everyday of the week #cafc," another said.

One fan even suggested that, when everyone is back fit, Nathan Jones may have to revisit the back-three formation due to the number of quality centre-backs now at the Valley.

But, overall, the main feeling is relief and pride at the club's ability to react quickly to a situation that they probably didn't expect to be in with just four days remaining of the transfer window.

As far as emergency signings go, Bindon isn't a bad addition at all. Mark McGuinness may have been unfavoured by Chris Wilder at Sheffield United, but there's a reason why the New Zealand international kept his place after being reintroduced to the line-up at Bramall Lane last season.

Plus, the 21-year-old was loaned out to a side last summer who had just lost the Championship play-off final, having accumulated 92 points during the regular season. It's evident how highly-rated Bindon is, and one difficult half-year in South Yorkshire won't change that.

With Nathan Jones admitting that the injuries to Koumetio and Sichenje are likely to take longer than weeks to recover from, and the latter's knee injury not looking good at all, Bindon will be able to come in and maintain the quality that the Welshman expects from his backline.

The Addicks are back in action tomorrow when they host out-of-form Preston North End, looking to make it three wins from three in a Championship campaign for the first time since 1992/93.
