Palmer had been named in the 27-man squad after missing out on the World Cup

England are due to begin their six-game league phase of the Nations League when they host newly crowned world champions Spain at Wembley on Friday.

They then visit Czechia in Prague next Tuesday before facing Croatia in Rijeka and finally the Czechia at Wembley on October 6. The three-week international break is the first since a change to FIFA’s match calendar wrapped the September and October breaks into one.

Palmer’s strong start to the season with Chelsea saw him recalled by England head coach Thomas Tuchel on Friday, after the German left Palmer out of his World Cup squad.

Yet Standard Sport understands Palmer is due to drop out of the squad and will play no part in the fixtures.

Chelsea sources say Palmer has a muscular injury that they need to manage.

Part of the consideration will have been managing his load, in order to limit the risk of the 24-year-old suffering any long-term injuries this season.

Palmer played 83 minutes of Chelsea’s season opener against Fulham last month and has since played the full 90 minutes in all four of the Blues’ following five Premier League games.

Chelsea have also appeared twice in the Carabao Cup, and Palmer lasted 90 minutes in the first of those matches, appearing as a half-time substitute in the second.

His form has improved since his summer break, largely explaining why Tuchel had recalled him. In those seven games across all competitions, the former Manchester City man has scored four goals and assisted a further two.
