A busy deadline day for Chelsea as Xabi Alono's side look to complete their business.

Chelsea have confirmed the pre-agreement with Italian side Atalanta for the transfer of teenage defender Honest Ahanor, who will join the Blues in 2027.

The 18-year-old will officially join Chelsea next summer, after the Blues struck a £40 million deal with Atalanta.

Ahanor has agreed personal terms with Chelsea, putting pen to paper on a long-term contract, although the details remain unspecified.

Such a deal is not uncommon for Chelsea in recent years, with summer signings Emmanuel Emegha (from Strasbourg), Geovany Quenda (Sporting CP), and Dastan Satpayev (FC Kairat) arriving on similar terms.

The difference is that, unlike the aforementioned players, Ahanor is set to spend this season on loan at Crystal Palace.

How would Ahanor be able to join Crystal Palace on loan?

Under the Premier League’s handbook, clubs cannot loan more than one player from another Premier League club at any one time.

Clubs are also not allowed to loan a player to another Premier League club in the same transfer window.

Since Axel Disasi is already on loan at Crystal Palace from Chelsea, Ahanor’s potential temporary move would not be allowed if he were already a Chelsea player. The last part is the key.

However, he legally remains an Atalanta player until next summer, so this would circumvent this issue. In other words, the young centre-back would join Crystal Palace as an Atalanta loanee.

This also solves the other rule. Since Chelsea have not technically acquired him, no rule prevents him from joining Crystal Palace on loan as an Atalanta player.

Crystal Palace need to reinforce their defence after Chadi Riad sustained an anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) knee injury that will likely keep him out for most of the season.

Just like Riad, Ahanor is a left-footed centre-back, so he would be a suitable replacement.

Since he is very young, the Italy international understandably has limited senior experience, having played only 35 games for Atalanta, 18 as a starter, and two appearances for the Italian national team.

The potential loan move could be a win-win situation for all parties involved.

Atalanta will get the transfer fees, Crystal Palace the much-needed defensive reinforcement, and Chelsea an outstanding talent who will have had a year of Premier League experience under his belt by the time he joins next summer.

As it stands, Levi Colwill is the only left-footed centre-back in Chelsea’s squad, plus Jorrel Hato, who is primarily a left-back, so Ahanor would certainly be a welcome addition to the squad next summer.
