Coventry City are reportedly keen on a deal to sign Gus Hamer

Sheffield United will be targeting a fight for promotion next season after a disappointing 2025/26 campaign.

The Blades finished 13th, with the team coming 13 points adrift of the play-off places, just 12 months after reaching the final.

The Yorkshire outfit have already added Matt Doherty and Romelle Donavan to their first team squad this summer as they look to bridge the gap to their rivals.

Sheffield United have until 1 September to complete any remaining transfer business before the market shuts for the remainder of the calendar year.

However, the Championship side will also be under pressure to hold onto their top talent, with the likes of Gustavo Hamer’s future uncertain - though the Steel City club may just have to reluctantly part ways with some big assets in order to level the playing field after their parachute payments package concluded.

It’s been reported by journalist Will Oelrich that Coventry City are looking to bring the playmaker back to the CBS Arena following their promotion to the Premier League.

Wilder has reiterated that Hamer is still a Sheffield United player after the 29-year-old played all 90 minutes of their pre-season friendly against Vfl Bochum at the weekend.

The 58-year-old has praised Hamer for his attitude out on the pitch, claiming that the player has said nothing regarding his future even as talks have been held with potential suitors.

"Gus had a red-and-white shirt on today," said Wilder, via the BBC.

"You've seen his actions, you've seen his attitude towards the game.

"He's not come to me and said he doesn't want to play.

“There has been interest, of course.

“That's out there.

“But as far as I'm concerned, he's a Sheffield United player."

Hamer signed for Sheffield United in the 2023 summer transfer window following their promotion to the top flight.

The Sky Blues had narrowly missed out on promotion with a defeat in the play-off final to Luton Town, which led to the playmaker making the switch to Bramall Lane.

The 29-year-old has been a key figure for the Yorkshire outfit in the years since, even with the club suffering relegation back to the Championship in 2024.

He’s made a total of 114 league appearances for the Blades, including 36 in the Premier League, contributing 18 goals and 25 assists.

It’s been reported that Hamer is open to a return to the CBS Arena, where he spent three seasons before signing for Sheffield United.

He was a key figure in the team reaching the play-off final under Mark Robins in 2023, with the club losing to Luton on penalties.

However, it’s believed that the Premier League side will need to match a significant asking price in order to convince Sheffield United to sell.

The Blades will begin their league campaign on 15 August with a clash against Birmingham City, and it remains to be seen whether Hamer will feature.

Hamer is into the final year of his contract with Sheffield United, so they are at risk of losing him for nothing in 2027 if they don’t sell this summer.

A return to Coventry would make a lot of sense for the Dutchman, who was beloved by Sky Blues supporters before his move to Bramall Lane.

Frank Lampard’s side are now competing in the Premier League, and can offer Hamer that step back up after Sheffield United were relegated two years ago.

Sheffield United are right to hold out for a big fee, but their lack of leverage means that Coventry can afford to wait it out and see if that asking price will be lowered.
