Christian Eriksen is conscious and doing well under the circumstances after collapsing during Denmark’s friendly against Ukraine in Odense on Sunday. The match was abandoned.

The 34-year-old Wolfsburg midfielder went down in the 65th minute after appearing to hold his chest, with medical staff on within seconds. He received treatment on the pitch, then walked to a waiting ambulance and was taken to hospital for tests. Denmark led 2-1 at the time.

Eriksen was fitted with an implantable cardioverter defibrillator, a small device that regulates abnormal heart rhythms, after his cardiac arrest during Denmark’s European Championship match against Finland in 2021.

Team doctor Morten Boesen said Eriksen walked off unaided and that his pacemaker appeared to respond as intended. He added Eriksen was briefly unconscious before coming round and will undergo tests to establish the cause.

“There was a throw-in, and I walked to the side. Then I turned around and I saw that Christian was on the way to the floor. We know what that means, and the reaction was super quick and respectful,” he told TV2. “I can only praise those who took care of it.”

Fans in Odense were initially silent before chanting his name as medics worked, and players formed a barrier. After Eriksen had left the field, both squads gathered to hear head coach Brian Riemer, who said the priority was Eriksen’s wellbeing and that everyone would support one another. He planned to visit Eriksen in hospital after his media duties.
