Pathé Ciss drew praise for his swift response after Íñigo Ruiz de Galarreta suffered an injury scare during Rayo’s match with Athletic at Vallecas.

In the 58th minute the Athletic midfielder fell awkwardly while contesting a ball with Isi in midfield. He lay motionless, his legs shaking with pain, and clutched his right elbow, where an injury was feared, according to El Correo.

Ciss reacted at once, raising his arm to alert the bench and urging a stoppage. He stayed by Galarreta’s side as play was halted.

Medical staff entered quickly and treated the player on the pitch. He needed assistance to leave the field, was clearly in pain, and was substituted.

The whole stadium applauded as Galarreta departed, with both home and visiting fans responding. The bond between the sets of supporters was evident.

Attention now turns to the medical report, with hope it proves only a scare. The immediate question is whether he can feature on Wednesday in the Copa semi-final in San Sebastián.
