Eray Cömert moved to clarify the late melee in the Valencia derby. In an Instagram post, the Valencia defender said he had not intended to humiliate Levante or their supporters, that he understood some might have taken offence during a difficult spell for the club, and that his gesture was an emotion-fuelled reaction to the joy of victory given his team's situation.

After the final whistle, the Swiss centre-back raised a corner flag while holding his shirt and headed towards Valencia's fans, provoking a melee involving members of both teams.

Levante staff and players confronted him as his team-mates moved in to shield him.

Objects were then thrown onto the pitch by sections of both sets of supporters in response.

The scenes marred the derby following the player's unnecessary provocation after Valencia's win.
