Barcelona loanee Marc Casado has suffered a major injury setback after Deportivo confirmed that the midfielder underwent surgery on a fractured right collarbone.

The 23-year-old was forced off during Deportivo’s meeting with Real Betis after an awkward fall following a collision with Marc Roca. 

Casado immediately knew something was wrong and was visibly in pain as he received treatment before being taken off.

The diagnosis now means Deportivo will have to cope without one of their midfield options for a significant period, while Barcelona will also be monitoring his recovery closely.

Marc Casado suffers fractured collarbone

Casado started the match for Antonio Hidalgo, but his evening ended around the 33rd minute.

After the collision with Roca, the Barcelona loanee pointed towards his shoulder and called for medical attention. He reportedly told the doctors: “It has broken. It has broken.”

The midfielder was subsequently substituted, with the initial reaction already suggesting that the injury could be serious.

Those fears were confirmed on Monday when Deportivo released an official medical update.

“Marc Casado underwent surgery at the HM Modelo Hospital in A Coruña, performed by orthopaedic surgeon Rafael Arriaza, due to a fracture of his right collarbone,” Deportivo announced.

The club did not provide a precise recovery timeline, instead stating that “his recovery will determine his return to competition.”

How long could Marc Casado be out?

As per SPORT, a collarbone fracture can require a considerable period away from competitive football, with a recovery period of around eight to 12 weeks possible depending on the nature of the injury and the player’s rehabilitation.

That would potentially keep Casado out for close to three months and could mean he does not return until after the Christmas break.

For Deportivo, it is a significant blow to their plans, as Casado had joined the club on loan on the final day of the transfer window but had already begun to establish himself in Hidalgo’s plans.

His latest appearance came after he was rotated for the previous league fixture, suggesting the manager was increasingly trusting him with a regular role.

Barcelona will monitor Casado’s recovery

The injury is also frustrating for Casado personally since his move to A Coruña was designed to give him the regular first-team football he was struggling to find at Barcelona under Hansi Flick.

He arrived at Deportivo hoping to play a central role in their push towards a return to the top flight, and his early involvement suggested he was moving in the right direction.

Instead, the midfielder now faces a lengthy rehabilitation period.

Barcelona will have a close interest in his progress given that Casado remains contracted to the Catalan club. 

For now, though, his priority will be recovering fully from the collarbone fracture before attempting to return to the pitch.
