The first international break of the 2026/27 is almost upon us and it promises to be an unusual one, with FIFA introducing a three-week window during which national teams will play four games in a row.

For the European nations, those fixtures come in the UEFA Nations League, and new Germany head coach Jurgen Klopp has responded in equally unusual fashion by naming a total of 44 players.

Indeed, Klopp has divided his squad into two separate groups. One will cover the first two matches, while the second will be responsible for the following two fixtures.

Karim Adeyemi and Marc-Andre ter Stegen called up

And, from Barcelona’s perspective, their in-form forward Karim Adeyemi and loanee Marc-Andre ter Stegen, currently at AFC Ajax, have been called up by the new Germany head coach, however not in the same list.

Ter Stegen has been included in the first squad, while Adeyemi appears in the second.

As such, Ter Stegen will be available for Germany’s matches against the Netherlands, coached by former Barcelona manager Xavi Hernandez, on 24 September, followed by Greece on 27 September.

Adeyemi will then join up for the games against Serbia on 1 October and Greece again on 4 October, this time away from home.

Only one player features in both selections: Augsburg goalkeeper Finn Dahmen.

Opportunities to stake a claim

Ter Stegen was left on the bench for Ajax’s most recent match against Willem II, although that was due to rotation rather than a fitness issue.

With Germany, he is expected to take over as the team’s first-choice goalkeeper following Manuel Neuer’s retirement.

Adeyemi, meanwhile, had been left out of Germany’s squad for the 2026 World Cup under Julian Nagelsmann. His performances since joining Barcelona have now opened the door to a return to international football.

Against Racing Santander last night, the forward won two penalties and also provided the assist for Lamine Yamal, having already scored three goals in his previous matches for the Catalans.
