Jürgen Klopp names first Germany squad with 16 newcomers for Nations League | OneFootball

Jürgen Klopp has named his first Germany squad, a 44-man group featuring 16 uncapped players for Nations League matches that will open his tenure. The fixtures fall across late September and early October.

According to L'Équipe, he has drawn up two lists, the first for the Netherlands in Amsterdam on 24 September and Greece in Augsburg on 27 September. The second covers Serbia in Munich on 1 October and Greece in Thessaloniki on 4 October.

Klopp was appointed after Julian Nagelsmann resigned, following Germany's World Cup round of 32 exit to Paraguay, a 1-1 draw settled 4-2 on penalties.

He said he enjoyed assembling the squad, sees plenty of talent and wants to get to know as many players as possible. Marc-André ter Stegen has been designated first-choice goalkeeper, with the 34-year-old at Ajax Amsterdam set to be one of the team's leaders. Klopp added that a side needs stability and a spine before it can become more creative.

He also confirmed Joshua Kimmich as captain. The Bayern Munich player will return to midfield for the national team after lining up at right-back under Nagelsmann at the World Cup and Euro 2024. Among the new faces are four Freiburg players, Europa League finalists last season and current Bundesliga leaders after three matches.
