Conmebol has changed how yellow cards carry over in the Conmebol Libertadores, extending the risk of suspension for players beyond the group phase.
According to Globo.com, cautions will now be wiped only from the first leg of the semi-finals.
Previously, yellow cards accumulated from the preliminaries through to the end of the group stage, then were cleared before the last 16. Only players sent off or those who reached the threshold in the final group round served bans.
Under the new system, every caution received from the preliminaries up to the second legs of the quarter-finals will continue to count.
A player is suspended after three yellow cards. The update applies to Conmebol’s international competitions this year.
