On Monday night, Corinthians’ advisory council, Cori, approved a contract renewal for Memphis Depay, 7-6, after president Miguel Marques cast the decisive vote following more than three hours of debate.

According to Meu Timao, Marques said the club statute meant the matter did not need to go to Cori because it did not reach the threshold of 40 minimum salaries, yet the body still reviewed it and recommended renewal.

He cited reduced terms compared with the first contract and the involvement of two partner companies as key factors in backing the Dutch forward’s stay, adding the original package would not have been feasible.

One partner, Fatal Fans, has offered up to R$ 10 million to help cover the deal’s costs. Memphis is expected at CT Joaquim Grava on Tuesday to finalise formalities and sign off the extension.

Even so, the No 10 is unlikely to feature against Rosario Central in the Libertadores on Thursday at 21:30 at Neo Química Arena. With the first leg drawn, the winner reaches the quarter-finals, while another draw would send it to penalties.
