Corinthians and José Martínez discuss mutual exit after injury

The saga between Corinthians and the Venezuelan midfielder José Martínez is nearing its end, as the ligament injury to his left knee that would sideline him for the entire 2026 season has exhausted the patience of the Timão board.

According to information gathered by Central do Timão, the conversations between Corinthians, José Martínez, and his staff are now moving toward an amicable termination, in which the club is expected to reach a payment agreement for part of the amounts owed to the player and his agents so that the contract can be ended. A unilateral termination through legal means, as previously considered, would require expenses and could result in lawsuits from the player against the club in the future.

Both parties have agreed that the atmosphere for a possible continuation of Martínez at Corinthians became unviable after his relationship with coach Dorival Jr reached its limit due to a series of unanswered communications and the player’s repeated tardiness, which made the situation unsustainable.

The discussions, details, and amounts to reach a contractual termination are still being negotiated internally to find a middle ground, but the situation regarding the player’s career remains unresolved. Wearing the black and white shirt, Martínez played in 70 matches, scored two goals, and provided two assists, in addition to winning the Campeonato Paulista and the 2025 Copa do Brasil titles.
