Corinthians edge debut win in Copinha with second-half goal

On the afternoon of this Saturday (3), Corinthians made their debut in the 2026 São Paulo Junior Football Cup. In a match at Zezinho Magalhães Stadium, in Jaú, Timãozinho faced Trindade, from Goiás, and in a balanced game, the winning goal in the 1-0 victory came only at the end of the second half, scored by Favela.

With this result, the team led by William Batista earned their first three points in Group 8, thus taking the provisional lead of the group. In the next matches, Timão will face Luverdense this Tuesday (6), at 7:30 pm (Brasília time), and will close their participation in the preliminary phase against XV de Jaú this Friday (9), at 6:15 pm.

Corinthians Lineup

Coach William Batista chose to start the match with: Matheus Corrêa; João Vitor, Fernando Vera, Iago Machado, Guilherme Pires, Thomas Lisboa, Bahia, Gui Amorim, Luiz Fernando, Luiz Fábio, and Kayque Dallaqua.

Refereeing

The referee was Gabriel Furlan, assisted by Giovanni Crescêncio and Leonardo Franzoni Guarnieri. The fourth official was Elder Patrick Dantas. The competition, initially, does not use VAR assistance.

First Half

Corinthians started the match better, pressing Trindade in the attacking half and even scoring just five minutes in, after a pass from Favela to Luiz Fernando who finished on goal. However, the play was disallowed for offside, and the match continued scoreless.

At the ten-minute mark, Luiz Fernando tried again with a powerful shot from outside the box, saved by the Goiás goalkeeper. Gradually, however, Timãozinho attacked less, giving space to the Goiás team, who had their first chance at 15 minutes, from a corner kick cleared by Matheus Corrêa.

After the hydration break, Trindade kept attacking, forcing Matheus Corrêa to make a good save from a close-range shot. Corinthians responded at 36 minutes, with a well-worked play that ended in a cross from Jacaré, cleared by the defense. In the final minutes, Timãozinho had their last chance to open the scoring, but Favela's shot was blocked. With that, the game went to halftime still scoreless.

Second Half

William Batista made tactical changes for the second half, with Corinthians regaining control of possession in the opening minutes, but creating few chances and suffering from a series of offside calls in attack.

The pressure intensified as the minutes passed, and the team ran risks on counterattacks, but managed to avoid conceding. In attack, Corinthians relied heavily on aerial balls and long passes, still struggling to truly threaten Trindade’s goal, even as the opposing team showed clear signs of fatigue.

Until, at the 38th minute, the black-and-white effort was rewarded. From midfield, Luiz Eduardo sent a long ball to Favela between the Trindade defenders. The striker broke free from his marker and, one-on-one with the goalkeeper, chipped it over him with quality, opening the scoring in Jaú for Timão!

After taking the lead, Corinthians dropped back, looking to withstand the opponent's pressure and successfully neutralized their attacks. Then, at 50 minutes, the referee ended the match, with a narrow win for the Alvinegro in their Copinha debut.
