Crysencio Summerville said West Ham let themselves down as their relegation was confirmed, addressing supporters in an end-of-season message.
A 3-0 win over Leeds on the final day counted for little, with relegation rivals Tottenham beating Everton. Nuno Espirito Santo’s side finished on 39 points, two behind Spurs and eight adrift of Leeds in 14th. According to yorkshireeveningpost.co.uk, Leeds will not receive any international appearance-related bonus if Summerville plays at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico.
In a similar position with Leeds in 2023, he was minded to stay and chase promotion when others left. He then shone under Daniel Farke, but defeat to Southampton in the play-off final preceded a summer switch, with West Ham triggering a release clause worth just over £25million plus add-ons.
He accepted both he and the team had fallen short, and thanked the Irons support for standing by them. He said their backing restored hope in difficult moments, and that coming so close made the pain sharper. He added that West Ham are too big to stay down and that the comeback starts now.
His immediate focus now turns to the World Cup after a first Netherlands call-up. It is his first inclusion at senior level, having missed a planned March involvement through injury. The Dutch could face Sweden and Japan in the group, with Gabriel Gudmundsson and Ao Tanaka among possible opponents, while Tunisia complete the pool.
