Pablo Daniel Osvaldo is in intensive care in a Llavallol hospital in Buenos Aires after surgery on a serious right lung pleural effusion. The former striker, 40, is in a stable condition.

His family told Clarín he is well and lucid, adding that doctors acted in time.

He was found at home in poor health by his sister and admitted on Thursday night.

A pleural effusion is an excessive build-up of fluid in the pleural space, the area between the lung and the outer membrane that covers it.

Osvaldo, capped 14 times by Argentina, played for Huracán, Atalanta, Lecce, Fiorentina, Bologna, Espanyol, Roma, Southampton, Juventus, Inter, Boca Juniors, FC Porto and Banfield. His spell at FC Porto ran from August 2015 to January 2016.
