Former France international Wissam Ben Yedder has been formally referred to the regional criminal court in Alpes-Maritimes, southern France to stand trial on charges of rape, attempted rape and sexual assault according to the Nice prosecutor’s office and reports from L’Equipe and AFP.

The 35 year old striker — who played for AS Monaco from 2019 to 2024 and now features in the Turkish second division — faces trial alongside his brother Sabri Ben Yedder who is accused of rape and sexual assault.

The charges stem from 2023 incident involving 2 women the brothers allegedly met at a party. Both men deny the accusations.

Ben Yedder’s lawyer, Sophia Kerbaa confirmed that her client has appealed the referral decision stating that he "strongly contests the charges that have been brought against him since the beginning of the proceedings"

"My client feels relieved and satisfied that the facts have finally been recognized"

Court details and potential penalties

In France, adults charged with crimes carrying sentences of 15 to 20 years in prison are tried before criminal court composed of professional judges.

The investigating judge agreed with the prosecutor’s recommendation — issued in May 2025 — to send both brothers to trial adding attempted rape charge specifically against Wissam Ben Yedder.

Ben Yedder, capped 19 times for France with 3 international goals has recently drawn more attention for off field controversies than for football achievements.

In September 2024 he was fined €90000 by Nice court for psychological abuse of his estranged wife.

Earlier, he had been convicted in Spain for tax evasion during his Sevilla spell (2016 - 2019).

In late 2024 he also received two-year suspended prison sentence for sexual assault while intoxicated, a verdict currently under appeal.
