Deportivo Riestra, Grêmio’s opponents on Tuesday, have incorporated boxing sessions after on-pitch training as part of their physical preparation ahead of their Copa Sudamericana meeting from 19:00.
According to Globo.com, the Argentine club’s staff have added gym-based boxing work to build strength and endurance. Players train in groups, hitting heavy bags in two to three minute rounds focused on power and stamina.
The exercises usually follow work on the grass and, depending on the schedule, take place three to four times a week.
The tie will be played at the Nuevo Gasómetro in Buenos Aires, San Lorenzo’s stadium, which will host the club for the seventh time. That tally includes two Sudamericana matches against Palestino and Torque City, plus three games held there in the 1960s.
Grêmio need at least a draw to keep control of their push for top spot. The sides are level on four points, the Brazilian team ahead on tiebreakers. Torque City lead the group.
