Ivorian international Elye Wahi arrived at Nice airport on Sunday night and was greeted by a large crowd of supporters.
According to L'Équipe, fans had waited a long time, with the flight from Tunis landing before the one from Francfort, then dozens gathered to welcome the forward amid surprised travellers and tourists.
Supporters clustered around Wahi as he made his way through the terminal.
Among them was 22-year-old Hugo Cautard, wearing a Youssouf Ndayishimiye shirt, who said he and many others had come to greet last season’s standout. He felt Wahi could strengthen the club’s new project despite limited means in the window, describing him as a symbol who helped save Nice and carried them to the Stade de France with a brace, his emotion clear at the end. He added that Wahi’s popularity is huge and such attachment to Nice is rare.
Francfort and Nice reached agreement on Saturday for his return on loan, following a strong spell from January to June that played a major part in the club’s survival.
Only the medical remains, scheduled for Monday, after which the player is expected to be confirmed.
