Ethan Mbappé eased a bruising week by scoring Lille’s second in a 2-0 win over Troyes on Sunday. The 19-year-old struck in the 90+3 minute, his first Ligue 1 goal this season.
On 8 September he was sent off against Betis in a 3-2 Champions League defeat after an elbow spotted on VAR. According to L'Équipe, he apologised on social media the following day and even took the defeat on himself, though it was not certain Lille would have come back with 11.
He later visited head coach Davide Ancelotti with a bottle of Burgundy, feeling he owed the staff after his error. Ancelotti viewed the week as important for the teenager’s growth, praising his immediate acceptance of responsibility and maturity, and said support rather than lectures was needed.
The Lille manager added that Mbappé’s qualities were clear in his 20-minute cameo and that the incident now needs putting behind him. He described a close, almost big brother dynamic and urged against piling on a young player who holds strong values.
Now over recent physical issues, Mbappé has been meeting expectations since his arrival.
