Europe lead the World Cup picture going into the last 16, with Asia wiped out and Africa reduced. According to L'Équipe, 16 teams are through.
Of those, seven are from UEFA. Nine European sides have been eliminated overall, including six in the round of 32.
South America underlined its strength. Only Ecuador fell in the round of 32, while Uruguay had gone in the group stage. Four CONMEBOL nations remain in contention for the quarter-finals.
Africa’s ranks have thinned markedly. After sending nine into the round of 32, CAF now have two left, Morocco and Egypt. Concacaf retain three, all co-hosts, the United States, Canada and Mexico.
Asia’s run is over. Japan and Australia, the last survivors, were knocked out by Brazil and Egypt, and the other seven AFC teams went out in the groups. Oceania’s only entrant, New Zealand, also departed in the group stage.
