FLW has ranked every name linked with a Sheffield Wednesday takeover in terms of how suitable they will be

A whole host of names have been linked with taking over Sheffield Wednesday since former owner Dejphon Chansiri placed them into administration last month.

Some have previous history within the English game, whilst others are outsiders who would be taking their first steps into football.

With this in mind, Football League World has ranked every name linked with an Owls takeover from least to most suitable.

Starting off in last place are Sheffield United’s owners, COH Sports.

It was recently revealed that one of the interested parties during the early stages of Sheffield Wednesday’s sale was in fact the group that owns their city rivals.

This wouldn’t have worked for a large number of reasons, including alienating both sets of fans and breaking EFL protocol.

Therefore, they are bottom of this list by some margin.

6 ? ? Simon Jordan

Former Crystal Palace owner and talkSPORT host Simon Jordan recently admitted that he fronted a consortium that were willing to provide £50m in funds to take over the Owls.

However, a reluctance to compensate previous chief Dejphon Chansiri meant that he has since withdrawn from the process, which means that he can’t rank very high on this list.

Furthermore, he was forced to place Palace into administration in 2010, which might not make him the perfect candidate to take over Wednesday in their current state.

John Textor was one of the early names linked with a Sheffield Wednesday takeover and freely discussed the topic even before they went into administration.

However, it has since become clear that securing investment in Derby County seems to be Textor’s primary motive, which means that he may have given up on taking over Wednesday.

Although he has the required finances to make a real difference at Hillsborough, it appears the US businessman has almost ruled himself out of the running.

4 ? ? John McEvoy

For much of the last month, John McEvoy has been one of the main names linked with taking over the Owls.

Not much is known about how much money he has to his name, but McEvoy has been described as a billionaire, which allows one to assume he has the financial might to comfortably own Wednesday.

However, one major drawback is his lack of knowledge of the English game or Sheffield as a city, due to his US roots, which forces him further down this list.

Adam Shaw was linked with leading a US-based consortium during the summer, which was seeking a deal to purchase Sheffield Wednesday.

The lifelong Owls fan hasn’t been mentioned since, but could well be part of one of the parties that have chosen to remain anonymous during this time.

Having previously bid £55m for the Steel City side, it is likely Shaw’s consortium possesses adequate finances. Coupled with his passion as a Wednesday fan, he seems like quite a favourable pick to lead the club forward.

2 ? ? Ryan Howsam

Ryan Howsam has only recently been revealed to be among the bidders looking to take over the Owls, but he could be an exciting owner.

With his companies reportedly worth almost £1B, money would be no issue as he looks to take Wednesday back up into the Premier League.

Having been born in Sheffield, the insurance tycoon will be able to relate to supporters and understand what they will want most from their new owner, something which was sorely lacking under the previous regime.

1 ? ? Mike Ashley

Perhaps surprisingly, Mike Ashley comes out on top of this list.

Although the 61-year-old may not have the best reputation in the English game due to his controversial spell in charge of Newcastle United, he did manage to take them up into the Premier League twice and maintain that status for the majority of his reign.

Wednesday fans will hope that he learned from some of the mistakes he made whilst in charge of Newcastle and use them to become a better owner at Hillsborough.

On the whole, Wednesday would love nothing more at this moment in time than to be a consistent, comfortable Premier League club and Ashley has the perfect experience to make that happen.
