Goalkeeper Fábio Rampi scored direct from a free-kick to give São José-RS a 1-0 first-leg win over Portuguesa-RJ in the third phase of Série D.

Globo.com notes that it ended a three-year wait across Série A to D for a goalkeeper to score from a free-kick, the previous one also by Rampi in 2023.

That earlier effort came against América-RN in Série C, when he also saved a stoppage-time penalty in a 2-0 victory.

Rogério Ceni remains the reference point with 62 career goals. Among active keepers, Everson struck from the edge of the area for Ceará against Corinthians in the 2018 Brasileirão.

Despite the free-kick drought, goalkeepers still found the net in those years, including a bicycle kick by John Wilquer in the 2024 Série D and regular penalties from Tadeu of Goiás and Tiago Volpi of Bragantino.

Rampi is São José’s designated taker, the active goalkeeper with most goals in Brazil and the third-highest scoring goalkeeper nationally, behind the retired Márcio on 43 and Rogério Ceni on 131. He has two goals this season, the first a penalty against São Joseense in round nine of the group stage.

The club’s tally puts him on 44 career goals, 42 for São José and two for Cruzeiro-RS. That figure includes penalty shoot-out conversions, with eight recorded since 2015, leaving him with 36.

Born in Aratiba, more than 400 km from Porto Alegre, he started at Cruzeiro-RS before settling at São José. He is a modern club idol and the most-used player this century, with 450 appearances across 12 seasons.

The tie will be decided on Sunday at 16:00 at Estádio Luso-Brasileiro. After that narrow first-leg win, the Gaúcho side hold the draw advantage.
