Farewell or a new opportunity? Bayern bosses make a decision on Davies

Alphonso Davies’ future at FC Bayern appears to be settled for the time being. After the Canadian had recently been repeatedly linked to a possible departure, there are now strong indications that he will remain in Munich for the long term. Despite his long history of injuries, club officials continue to have faith in the 25-year-old—and are planning an open competition for the starting spot with new signing Nathaniel Brown.

Over the past two years, Alphonso Davies has been one of the unluckiest players at FC Bayern. Recurring injuries have repeatedly set the left back back and prevented him from consistently maintaining his top form.

As BILD reporter Julian Agardi explained in the “Bayern-Insider” podcast, club officials are hoping for one thing above all else: that Davies will finally remain injury-free for an extended period.

Injuries have held Davies back

“When it comes to Alphonso Davies, everyone is probably hoping that he’ll finally stay injury-free for a while,” Agardi explained.

The numbers illustrate just how badly the Canadian has been hit by injury recently. According to the BILD reporter, Davies has missed a total of 71 competitive matches for FC Bayern over the past two seasons. “We crunched the numbers during the World Cup: He’s missed 71 competitive matches for FC Bayern over the last two seasons. That’s an insane number,” said Agardi.

Particularly severe was the cruciate ligament tear that Davies suffered in March 2025 during an international match for Canada. On top of that, he suffered a cartilage injury in his right knee. Following his long layoff, he sustained several thigh muscle injuries that sidelined the fullback for months once again.

Competition with Brown Instead of a Sale

Due to this string of injuries, there has recently been repeated speculation about a possible sale. According to Agardi, Bayern officials had indeed considered internally whether to respond to an attractive offer. “That’s also why there were repeated rumors that Bayern might be open to considering a sale of Davies if a reasonably high offer came along.”

As things stand now, however, that assessment has changed significantly. “From what we’re hearing, that’s pretty much off the table now,” the reporter explained, referring to the sale speculation.

Instead, Davies is expected to remain at FC Bayern and face competition from new signing Nathaniel Brown in the future. The club’s leadership hopes this will bring additional quality to the left side of the defense and, at the same time, that Davies will permanently return to his former form after his long period of injury struggles.

For Vincent Kompany, a fit Davies would be a huge asset. Together with Brown, the Bayern coach would have two top-class options for the left side and could strategically manage the workload over a long season. As a result, the Canadian’s departure no longer seems like a realistic scenario, at least not this summer.
