Flamengo players have voiced their sadness at Arrascaeta’s injury, with Léo Ortiz and Saúl speaking after Thursday’s morning session at Ninho do Urubu.

According to Globo.com, the Uruguayan returned to Rio de Janeiro and underwent surgery on Thursday, with recovery estimated at six to eight weeks before he is available to head coach Leonardo Jardim.

Ortiz said the squad are very upset given Arrascaeta’s recent form and his importance on and off the pitch. He added that the midfielder’s leadership will still help day to day, but the team are losing a great player.

Recalling last season, Ortiz noted he missed a large spell, as did Pedro, and others stepped up to fill the gaps. He said he is sure the group is strong enough to handle setbacks.

Saúl said he had spoken to Arrascaeta, calling the injury an accident that can happen and promising the group will stay close and help with anything he needs. He described the absence as significant and called Arrascaeta a unique player, unlike anyone in the squad, in South America or in Europe, adding that many do not fully realise how good he is.

He also argued the playmaker should join his national team when selected, saying it matters to him and that players always want to play. Everyone wants him fit again, he added, but what happened was an unfortunate blow.

After a two-week international break, Flamengo visit Santos at 19h30, Brasília time, next Thursday at Vila Belmiro.
