Flamengo have stepped up talks to sign Ecuador forward Anthony Valencia from Royal Antwerp, and the winger was left out of the Belgian club’s squad for Sunday’s game.
According to Paparazzo Rubro-Negro, the player’s agent has travelled to Brazil to work on final details and initial paperwork has already begun, raising hopes that a deal could be concluded in the coming days.
Valencia, 23, is a left-footed winger who operates mainly on the right. He is viewed as Flamengo’s leading option to replace Gonzalo Plata, who recently departed. He was a back-up to Dynamo Moscow’s new signing at the last World Cup.
Talks centre on a fee of around 5 million euros for 100% of his economic rights, roughly 30 million reais. Royal Antwerp would retain 15% of any future capital gain on a resale.
Flamengo want to move quickly so he can be registered for the Libertadores. The registration deadline for the quarter-finals is 4 September, and Valencia came through at Independiente del Valle, Flamengo’s opponents in that round.
