Flamengo seeks to join STF case over betting ban | OneFootball

Flamengo has explained why it is seeking amicus curiae status at Brazil's Supreme Federal Court in the case challenging the government's betting ban.

The club said in a statement that it has applied to join ADI 8.027/DF, which tests the constitutionality of Provisional Measure 1.394/2026. It aims to present technical arguments on funding for sport, existing sponsorships, Olympic and youth programmes, and legal certainty under prior rules. It added that it does not oppose regulation, but says changes of this scale should respect constitutional principles and consider impacts on contracts and investments.

The stated aim is to help the Court assess wider consequences for the sporting ecosystem, given the breadth and pace of the measure's impact.

On Friday 25 a total prohibition of fixed-odds betting was introduced, extending to online games and virtual casinos such as Jogo do Tigrinho.

Across Brazilian football, 14 of the 20 Série A clubs carry betting brands as main shirt sponsors.

Examples include Betano with Flamengo, Sportingbet with Palmeiras and Vasco, Betnacional with Cruzeiro, and Superbet with Fluminense and São Paulo.
