Former West Ham, Chelsea and England right-back Glen Johnson thinks it would be unlikely that his former Anfield team-mate Steven Gerrard would be interested in a return to Ibrox. Steven Gerrard returning to Rangers is unlikely.
Gerrard enjoyed a winning spell in the SPL and has been linked with a fresh attempt to succeed in Scotland as current Rangers boss Russell Martin comes under increasing pressure.
Johnson thinks that Gerrard will not want to uproot his family to go North of the border once more.
During this exclusive sitdown interview, Johnson:
Glen Johnson was speaking on behalf of 10bet.
Would you tip your former teammate Steven Gerrard to go back into Ibrox and turn things around if the Scottish giants dispense with Russell Martin?
“He did a great job before when he was there, but it’s a different group of players there, and a different club he’d be walking into.
It doesn’t always make sense to go back to somewhere you were before, so I don’t know if he’ll be keen to get back to it. Rangers might not be the right place for him anymore.
I don’t think he’d be tempted to go back, because all his family are down south. It would be a huge upheaval for something that might not be as good as it was last time.
As for Frank Lampard, I think he’ll prefer fighting for playoffs and promotion, even the title, than slugging it out in Scotland with a side that is struggling right now. If Lamps pulls it off with Coventry this season, they will be back in the Premier League, and that’s where everyone wants to be.”
Steven Gerrard returning to Rangers seems unlikely according to Johnson. Johnson’s comments underline the difficult position Rangers find themselves in, as pressure mounts on Russell Martin yet realistic alternatives appear thin. While Gerrard’s name dominates headlines, his reluctance means the board may have to look elsewhere for stability. Fans still idolise him for delivering the 55th title, but the circumstances have drastically changed. The Scottish Premiership is tighter, rivals are stronger, and Rangers are fragile. Johnson’s belief that Gerrard will stay away leaves Martin clinging on, while speculation about other candidates such as Danny Rohl or Gary O’Neil gathers pace. The uncertainty only deepens the crisis engulfing Ibrox.
