The French Football Federation confirmed on Thursday that Bordeaux have been relegated to Régional 1 after being denied a National 2 reprieve, leaving the club perilously close to liquidation.

Meeting late in the afternoon, the executive committee rejected the reprieve and upheld the DNCG’s sanction to demote the club to Régional 1 for this season.

Prospective buyers had indicated they would pull out if the team were not in a national division, a stance that now pushes the six-time French champions closer to judicial liquidation.

Sparta Capital and Park Bench, though two weeks late, had assembled 10.6 million euros to bring the budget back into balance. It proved in vain.

Bordeaux’s outlook has further dimmed after Thursday’s ruling.
