Gareth Taylor has admitted that the Liverpool squad “needs some help” in the January transfer window, amid summer sales, recent injuries and the club’s difficult start to the season.
The Reds have had a miserable start to the Women’s Super League season, with zero points on the board after their opening six games.
Their cause has not been helped by numerous factors, including the loss of some key players and being unable to do the business they wanted in the summer transfer window.
Taylor has admitted that he was part of the problem after his late arrival at the club in the summer.
Should Liverpool fail to beat Brighton on Sunday, they will have made among the 10 worst starts to a WSL season after seven games.
Liverpool head coach Gareth Taylor admitted that his current squad ‘needs some help’ during the January transfer window.
The former Manchester City boss highlighted the loss of Olivia Smith, who joined Arsenal for £1 million during the summer transfer window.
Liverpool have also lost key players to long-term injuries across the opening months of the season.
He said: “The squad needs some help, there’s no doubt about that. I have made it clear previously that we have lost good players last season.
“When you lose the likes of Olivia Smith, who is a top player and brings goals to the team. On top of that, we have lost Hobie (Marie Hobinger) and Sophie (Roman Haug) to ACLs (injuries), which is unfortunate.
“We know we need a bit of help. It doesn’t make the challenge any easier. We have had a number of challenges that we have faced in front of us and worked as a team to get over those, push forward and make this team better.”
Liverpool endured a long wait before they could appoint Taylor as head coach before the start of the season.
The Reds had been linked with Taylor throughout the summer before he finally joined, just under a month before the start of the new season.
He admits that this played a role in their disappointing summer transfer window.
When asked if the club had plans to strengthen during the January window, he said: “Yeah, we hope so. People at the club are being very diligent with that. I think the important thing to do was to analyse the last window (summer).
“There were a lot of circumstances as to why we were late and ended up not doing the business we would have liked to have done.
“Obviously, I was one of those factors, coming in quite late. When time is running up, it is hard to prise players away from clubs who don’t want to give up those players.
“We know this January window feels a little bit different to the normal windows of the summer. On top of that, you have got no international tournament in the summer where players feel like they need to go out and start playing.”
Liverpool hope to end their pointless start to the season against Brighton on Sunday.
The Reds this week were boosted by the news that Mia Enderby had returned to training after her nasty-looking fall against Tottenham.
Liverpool will be without Gemma Bonner after the defender suffered a head clash during training this week.
