Gianluca Frabotta: The intrigue around the former Juventus man who hardly featured for West Brom

One year, six substitute appearances, then a mutual-consent departure, Gianluca Frabotta’s West Brom stint became more mystery than impact.

According to ExpressAndStar.com, the left back joined from Juventus after QPR interest earlier in the window, having played senior games for the Turin club and even shared the pitch with Cristiano Ronaldo. His move was announced on undisclosed terms. He initially moved from Bologna to Juventus C, with loan spells before Albion swooped in a summer of change under new owner Shilen Patel.

Many expected him to start at left back once Conor Townsend was sold to Ipswich Town. Instead Torbjorn Heggem filled the role from his natural central berth, and Frabotta stayed on the fringes. A few under-21 outings only reinforced his absence from first-team plans.

Supporters’ curiosity grew, helped by a little-known social media account posting upbeat training snippets about the rarely seen full back. It was suggested a family member ran it, but the lobbying made no difference. Fans still wanted to see him, more for his pedigree and scarcity than on-field evidence.

Frabotta left by mutual consent 12 months into a three-year deal. Given his minutes, the feedback around him, and the fact he did not convince two permanent managers and two interims, it is safe to say he was not at the required level.

He resurfaced in late summer 2025 at Serie B side Cesena, returning to Italy. He has made 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring four goals and providing one assist.
