Six years after leaving RB Salzburg for Borussia Mönchengladbach, Stefan Lainer is returning to his former club.
As announced by both clubs on Sunday, the 32-year-old defender is making the move back to Salzburg.
“We are thankful for everything Stevie has done for Borussia over the years,” said Gladbach’s managing director for sport, Roland Virkus.
“Having not played as many minutes in recent times, he asked us for a change of scenery and we are pleased to have found a good solution for all parties. We wish him all the best for the future!”
Lainer made 163 appearances for Gladbach, scoring five goals and providing 14 assists. Reflecting on his time at the club, the Austrian international said:
“My six years at Borussia were intense, both on and off the pitch, and featured a number of highs and lows. I would like to thank the club for their fantastic support and will particularly miss my teammates and the amazing fans here. It was an honour to play for this club.”
