Nottingham Forest will move for a powerful centre-forward after fans at the City Ground bade farewell to Taiwo Awoniyi, who is joining newly-promoted Coventry City.
According to NY Times, Chelsea’s Liam Delap remains under consideration. The 23-year-old was a Forest target before a £30 million switch from Ipswich last summer and has slipped down after Danny Welbeck’s arrival.
Head coach Oliver Glasner still wants two or three signings, with a wing-back and a central midfielder also on the list. He prizes robust No 9s and points to recent leading scorers to make the case.
He also seeks goals from his No 10s but wants a focal point, and Mateta is not a Forest target. For now he is content to start with Chris Wood and Igor Jesus.
Igor scored in Saturday’s 2-0 win over Coventry City, with Neco Williams also on target. On Sunday, Wood netted a penalty in a 2-0 victory over Brest at the City Ground.
Glasner says pre-season shows goals are shared across the team and that they feel prepared, though he will add if the right profile and price emerge. He says Igor has been a regular scorer.
Forest have signed Ousmane Diomande for £35 million from Sporting CP and Xaver Schlager on a free, and loans are planned, with Tyler Bindon likely to go. Wood expects to battle Igor for starts and says Coventry will benefit from Awoniyi. Leeds await next weekend.
