Grêmio have appointed former referee Leonardo Gaciba as the club’s official refereeing consultant, aiming to strengthen influence within the CBF and smooth communication with the body.

The club said in a statement that new Brasileirão rules approved this week, and in force from the next round, were among the reasons for the hire, citing the “Protocolo Vini Jr.” that penalises players who cover their mouths in disputes.

Gaciba will provide continuous guidance to players and coaching staff on officiating matters, including feedback to the squad, technical reports and conduct assessments. The role is intended to give greater technical weight to the club’s submissions and provide a heavyweight interlocutor with decision-makers.

He will liaise with the refereeing commissions of the FGF, CBF, Conmebol and FIFA. After each Grêmio match, he will analyse decisions and file evaluations to support technical and behavioural adjustments.

Until last year, these duties were handled by technical coordinator Luís Felipe Scolari, while Paulo Pelaipe currently represents the club in meetings.

Gaciba led the CBF’s refereeing department from 2019 to 2021, was voted the country’s best referee four times, and most recently worked as an adviser at Cruzeiro.
