Grêmio are negotiating the early termination of Willian’s contract after the 38-year-old midfielder was told by coach Luis Castro he is not in the club’s plans for the second half of the year.
Talks have been under way since last week and, according to Gremistas.net, although his deal runs only until December, the numbers involved make agreement difficult. He has been at the club since mid-2025. Willian is the second-highest earner in the squad and has further sums due.
Beyond salaries due to year end, Grêmio also owe signing-on fees. The bonus was set in three instalments, with the final payment due in September. The total exceeds R$ 12 million.
The club are negotiating through a lawyer engaged by Willian. While talks continue he is training with the group at CT Luiz Carvalho, but he will not feature in matches.
The club believe ending the deal would cut the wage bill and ease cash flow, even at a high overall cost. Any settlement is likely to be spread over the next two years.
The board aim to trim monthly wages to around R$ 18 million, down from more than R$ 23 million at the start of this season.
