Grêmio are negotiating Cristian Olivera’s move to Bahia, with the likely outcome a loan through to the end of 2026. The 23-year-old Uruguayan forward accepted Bahia’s proposal after Nacional of Uruguay withdrew.
According to Globo.com, talks accelerated from Wednesday when Nacional decided not to press ahead. Cruzeiro and São Paulo had also shown interest.
Grêmio rejected Nacional’s bid as below expectations. The Uruguayan side proposed paying 150,000 euros, R$ 971,000, for a one-year loan with an option to buy.
Bahia had long tracked the player but only formalised an offer in recent hours. Only final details separate the clubs from a formal announcement.
Olivera was among Grêmio’s costlier arrivals in the last window. The club paid US$ 4.5 million, R$ 25.6 million at the time, matching the fee for defender Wagner Leonardo early in 2025. He joined from Los Angeles FC.
His spell in Porto Alegre proved difficult. During the season he told Uruguayan media he was unhappy with a reserve role.
He later stated publicly that he wanted to play for Nacional and moved to Uruguay after the season while expecting an agreement that did not materialise. He made 37 appearances, scoring five goals and providing two assists.
