Grêmio have rehired assistant coach James Freitas from São Paulo. He previously worked at the club until 2025, and the move helps restore the permanent backroom structure that was dismantled on Luís Castro’s arrival.

According to Globo.com, Freitas is already at CT Luiz Carvalho and is awaiting the squad’s return on Thursday for work during the Fifa international window.

Since Castro’s exit, Grêmio have added fitness coach Mario Pereira and goalkeeping coach Mauri Lima, both former staff members. Rogerio Dias, previously in the academy, has been moved back to the first team. The group also includes Marcel Cardozo, assistant fitness coach, and Humberto Flores, assistant goalkeeping coach.

Under-20 coach Kauê Belmonte, who supported Felipão in the build-up to the Botafogo match as part of an interim group, has returned to the youth ranks. On his return to the club, Renato Portaluppi brought only his assistant Alexandre Mendes.

In December, Grêmio dismissed Freitas and goalkeeping coach Mateus Famer, now at Fortaleza, to make room for Castro’s staff. That contingent comprised two assistants, two fitness coaches, a goalkeeping coach and a performance analyst.
